An invitation from Inverness Field Club

At last Thursday’s HighlandLIT, we were invited to attend Inverness Field Club meetings next week (21st October) and next March (17th)!
New HighlandLIT member Norman Newton, retired High Life Highland Reference Librarian, and local historian. One of Norman’s voluntary tasks involves inviting speakers to address the Inverness Field Club. He had been with us for Cal Flyn’s presentation in September about her book ‘The Savage Landscape’ and its investigation of the concept of wilderness, and had invited Cal to speak at the Field Club on March 17 2027. He has invited the distinguished academic Jim Hunter for the same evening. Hunter will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publication of ‘The Making of the Crofting Community’, and Cal Flynn will jointly discuss with him the theme of the emptied glens which we now consider to be Wilderness. Sounds fascinating! Norman will share more details nearer the time.
Norman also invited us to attend the Field Club event on 21st October 2026, at the Leonardo Hotel in Millburn Road at 7pm. Alastair Mitchell will give an illustrated lecture, ‘Immeasurable Worlds’ – a reflection on how visitors to the far north of Scotland in the early 19th century related to the landscape, how artists sought to depict it, and what shaped their views. (Cal Flyn explores similar themes in ‘The Savage Landscape.’) He will share with us many art-works from his own collection, including a set of 22 very rare Duchess of Sutherland aquatints. (Entry to the lecture costs £5 for non-members, with a £3 concession.)
